Devised as a showcase by David O Selznick for then wife Jennifer Jones, it was butchered for its US release when Selznick took a dislike to it. Nonetheless the original version remains a fine paean to the British countryside (specifically Shropshire), almost pagan in places, and an underappreciated work in the Powell-Pressburger canon.
